The first meeting of the Anti-Sexual Assault School, sponsored by a federation of students representing Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongsangnam-do, was held at 1 p.m on April 13 in Cheongchon Hall.
The anti-sexual assault movement in universities began with the ‘Professor Sin’ case in 1993, which became a social issue. The movement spread, but sexual assaults still occur constantly on campuses. Recently in March, a college graduate in Incheon made a scandalous video titled ‘'Professor Bribe--Sexual Assault Accusation’ to report his crime, causing repercussions.
Most of the sexual assaults on campus occur late at night inside deserted buildings and on unfrequented streets. On campus there are no police officers and few people. Especially, women’s lounges, bathrooms, and dormitories are dangerous and defenseless places where female students are exposed to criminals. According to police statistics, there were 110 reported cases of sexual assault on campus in 2004, 126 in 2005, and143 in 2006.
The first meeting, under the title ‘Our Safe School of Happiness,’ offered discussion sessions on issues related to gender and sexual assaults, recovery methods for victims, preventive measures, and legal solutions.
