Korea in 1997 through BP Korea, an energy company in Korea. After that, she obtained a seat on the board of directors at PAG (Premier
Automotive Group)--Korea and worked in financial affairs and the personnel department. Then she became a CEO of Volvo Automobiles-
Korea. Also, she translated 「Rules for Renegades」by Christine Comaford-Lynch.
Traditionally only men have played important roles in the automobile industry. Yet now there is a woman who is a leading player in a man's
field. Lee Hyang-rim (49), CEO of Volvo-Korea, is the woman. The following is the lecture, 'Global Leadership and Women in the 21st Century' given by CEO Lee for the 1040 project sponsored by Busan Metropolitan City and hosted by Busan Women and Family Development Institute on December 22 of last year.
△Study English by Reading a Book and Newspaper
CEO Lee started her lecture with the sentence: "read a book and newspaper and study English daily." Although she is over 40, she reads a book and newspaper and studies English every day. She reads a book while she waits for her turn at airports for an overseas business trip. She
carries a big bag because she puts books in her bag. "Even if I have a tight schedule as a leader, I certainly read three or four books a month,"
she said.
She said not to read a newspaper would mean that you no longer have a sense of the world. The reason for translating 「Rules for Renegades」was also an opportunity to study English every day.
She emphasized "as the clothes get wet slowly in a drizzle, doing three things a little every day makes your own incomparable asset with
others."
△Throw Away Your Ego
There is nothing to fear if you throw away "ego, which is another word for self or pride." To undertake a difficult challenge is to risk hurting one's ego. And a person who has experienced failure is afraid to fail because that person's ego got hurt, not the person himself. Yet the failure is part of learning and studying one's failure can be one's asset or experience.
△Female Leadership and Vision
CEO Lee conveyed her key to success by listing briefly three things to an audience of 190. The first thing is reading a book. Reading a book can improve the quality of life and give direction and modesty. No matter how distinguished, a person is humble in front of a book. "A modest person without arrogance can be a leader who has a warm heart." And "modesty is rather strong than weak," she said.
The next is undertaking a challenge. She said "choice and focus" many times. A leader can inspire workers also to focus on needs, to be
conscious and to train constantly.
She is going to go to an overseas branch different from her position in Korea. "I decided to go to an overseas branch with my family, including
my mother, for a new experience," and "I didn't have to drive myself when I needed to go somewhere in Korea because of a driver, but I have to
drive overseas," she said with a smile.
Her last advice was to not lose feminine attribute. CEO Lee said, "I could become a leader because I still had my feminine attribute," so
show your concern, share and be maternal. She shared the pain of a new recruit who was reprimanded by her boss. “Success is not
something to pursue,” she said.
