Many students at our university take lectures which are directly related to employment such as TOEIC classes, computer classes and what not. Of course to take this kind of lecture is good. However, our college days are not golden years where we can explore unknown areas freely. To introduce lesser known lectures in our university to students, reporters covered them by taking part in them. Lectures we covered are five lectures: Professor Kang Eun-gyo's 'Practice of Poetry Writing', Professor Cha Bo-jung's 'Sports Massage', Professor Hwang Sung-won's 'Website Design and Development', Professor Ha Hong-gul's 'Photography', Professor Seo Min-jung's 'Diet Yoga'. Learn how to write poemsThere is a famous poet at our university. We cannot talk about the history of modern Korean poetry without her. She is Professor of Department of Creative Writing, Kang Eun-gyo, who is the author of If We Were to Turn into Water. We attended her lecture titled the 'Practice of Poetry Writing' on the 17th of last month at Creative Writing laboratory in the College of Humanities. When We opened the door of the lecture room, some students were busily preparing presentations on the platform. It seemed that the number of students were about 30 to 40 in a small lecture room. Professor Kang Eun-gyo was sitting down on a window seat and looking at the students' preparations with delight. After a while the presentations began. The subject was 'The World of Jung Ji-yong, Kim Young-rang and Nah Tae-ju'. One female student, as the representative of her group, presented assiduously. After she finished presenting poets' works and their world in detail, Professor Kang advised gently that it is the presenter's task to observe how these poets' features appeared in their works and not to repeat information all people already know from a high school textbook. We wondered why students made presentations on other poets instead of writing their own poems. "However, it is very difficult to write poems. If you try to write right now, you will be at a loss. So students should read many good poems first to help them to write their own, and they can write poems after some familiarity with good poems. For example, if you observe how the poet Kim Young-rang's musical rhythm shows up in his poetry, you can write a poem based on this model yourself," said Professor Kang. In this lecture, students learn how to write poems through lectures on poetry writing techniques; literary language, defamiliarization, image, poetic license, and so on, and also present their creative efforts and review them. "I am proud to take a course from a really famous poet. Moreover, this lecture is interesting and good, for I can understand literature deeply," said Han Ji-hyun, a sophomore whose major is Creative Writing. We recommend this lecture to students who are interested in writing poems but cannot start because they do not know how to write. Study photographyPhotography is a part of our daily life as digital camera and camera phone have come into wide use. More interest in photography has come about with the release of the DSLR hand camera. Introductory books on photography are widely available and even photography classes. Do you know that a photography class is also available at our university We visited lecture room CA402 in the College of Arts in Gudeok campus to cover a photography lecture on the 20th of last month. The class was conducted in a free-spirited atmosphere. All students had a camera. After the professor explained techniques for taking pictures, students took a picture with their camera. The professor said, "Students learn by experience instead of my explanations." The professor led the lecture in a friendly way, making sure that each student gripped the camera in a correct manner and had the right posture. The class was opened for students at College of Art to sketch landscapes and moving objects saved on photographs. But nowadays, regardless of major, many students take the class. Most students consider photography a hobby, many active in a photo association and taking part in public subscription. Yeo Sang-a (junior), a Fine Arts major, said, "I was happy to learn parts of the camera reserved for specialists, which I had used without a second thought." According to Professor Ha Hong-gul, "Regardless of major, photography can be learned easily by everyone." He recommended photography class that it's a happy thing to have a hobby to enjoy life. Make a website by yourself With the number of Internet users increasing, most compa-nies have their homepages on the web. These days, we can say that one's impression of a company depends on the design of its web site. Is there a class at our university in which we can learn how to make a web site and design it The answer is yes. We covered the lecture 'Website Design and Development' on the 17th of last month. The class was excited early in the morning. The students were learning layer palette effect functions of Photoshop CS under the professor's directions in the computer laboratory. If students do not understand something, they asked the professor. Then the professor helped students practice. When the class was almost over, Professor Hwang Sung-won asked students, "Are you guys writing the minutes " It means that each team of five students plans web design through the conversation and makes a web site. It does not mean they only make a web site. They analyze business before middle exam and make a web site before final exam. "Through this lecture, students learn marketability of e-business, and it can be of help for their business in the future and increase its profitability," said Professor Hwang. "They can develop an ability to analyze business and find ideas for starting an enterprise. And also actually they plan and design a web site for introduction and publicity of some companies as part-time job after they finish learning," he added. "This lecture fits Management Information Systems and is a fresh attempt. I am excited to have a website that I made and designed with my own hands after this class," Kim Sung-gwang, a junior Management Information System major, said.If we have the ability to make and manage websites by ourselves in this information-oriented society, needless to say, it will be a big asset in our work life and hobby activities. Have a nice figure with yoga 'Diet Yoga' lecture begins in the gym on the 5th floor of the College of Sports Science after lunch, about the time when you feel sleepy. Students join the class with casual clothes like training wear. Class begins with stretching to limber up in calm atmosphere. At this point, you have to do abdominal breathing while stretching because you have to use muscles which you do not use usually. "No matter how difficult the posture may be, you can do it by keeping your breath steady," Professor Seo Jung-min encouraged students. Students learned about Nadi Sodhana Pranayama, which gives balance between body and soul during the lecture on the 23rd of last month. In this form of breathing, the thumb, the ring finger and the baby finger hold one side of your nostril by turns, while you breathe through the other side of the nostril. Professor Seo emphasized breathing and said "Yoga is formed motions, a breath and meditation and if you breathe as well as you can, you could increase your physical strength."You loosen yourself up to do stretching exercises and to breathe enough after that you do yoga. Students did a top and a tree posture to increase physical strength on this day. A top posture is the pose in which your hand raises your leg while you are in a standing state. In a tree posture you put the sole of the foot to the inside of the thigh while you are standing, both hands raised over the head. After yoga posture, students meditated with music to relax their body and the class finished. The majority of students were awkward with yoga because they were beginners. Lee Ho, a senior Physical Education major, said, "The practice of yoga was beneficial to me, increasing my flexibility and calming my mind by meditation." He added, "It is easy to get hurt because of limited flexibility while you work out" so "if you do yoga regularly, you can prevent an injury from happening in the gym." This class would be good for students who need mental rest because of stress, are sensitive, have back problems such as disc, and want to lose weight. Get healthy thanks to sports massageWe visited the wrestling room on the 4th floor of the College of Sports Science to listen to a lecture called 'Sports Massage' on the 18th of last month. Before the professor started the regular lecture, he asked for a volunteer who wanted a massage. All students in attendance were in casual clothes. Massage for this day was facial massage. The professor demonstrated on a volunteer on a bed as the students listened to his explanation and tips carefully (sometimes a student imitated). After the demonstration, students scattered, and with their partner they massaged each other, following what they learned a moment ago. "It is more important that students do the massage than listen to my instruction," Professor Cha Bo-jung said. Students did their best in doing massage for their partner. In conclusion, he explained the efficacy of facial massage and finished the lecture. Students learn the history and necessity of sports massage, anatomical physiology and so forth in sports massage lecture. The reason why they learn anatomical physiology, which is as difficult as medical studies, is that they must know which part they have to massage when some part is aching. It is a practical lesson centered lecture. Students from other colleges now also take this lecture because they think massage is necessary in daily life. Sports massage is concerned with physical functions such as adjusting athlete's physical condition, strengthening motor skills, preventing injury and the like. It helps to relax the tension of muscles not only for the athlete but also for laborers who repeat a certain motion again and again and for people whose physical balance are lost. Hence it is of help to you in daily life. "After I was given sports massage, I felt languid at first and refreshed later," Choi Jun-ho (junior), who was given a massage by the professor this day at Physical Education, said, adding "This lecture is practical and you can make use of it right after you have learned it. You can strengthen your relationship with your friends and family through massage.""Nowadays, it seems the image of sports massage is becoming decadent, but sports massage helps you live a sound and healthy life. I recommend this class because it is very helpful," said Professor Cha. By reporters Kang Myoun-a, Kim Mi-hee and Choi Jung-in 동아대학보 제1069호 (2009. 4. 6)
