Orientation for the freshmen class of 2009 was held in the gymnasium on Seunghak campus from February 10 to 13 for four days. Many freshmen participated in the orientation, which was held to inform them of school affairs and the necessity for campus life and learning.Freshmen this year are different from previous freshmen classes because they were born in the 1990s. The generation gap is an expression which describes a relationship with a big age difference like that between parents and their children in the past. But nowadays we often feel a generation gap from people closer in age because of rapid changes in the world. We surveyed freshmen who were born in 1990 to research their thoughts and values. This research was done for a total of 475 freshmen, with 44~50 students from each college. △ Education and Learning1. Which is the most important subject of study to you 51.58 percent (245 students), more than half of all, of total respondents replied it was a foreign language. The next were studying for their major 41.47 percent (197 students), studying for certificates 6.53 percent (31 students), others 0.42 percent (2 students), which were developing humanity. The college which had the most freshmen who think learning foreign languages was the College of Business Adminstration, 80 percent (40 students) of total respondents of College of Business Adminstration answered the most important subject for them was foreign languages. The college which had the least number of freshmen who think learning foreign languages was the College of Arts, just 11.15 percent (5 students) of total respondents of the College of Arts answered the most important subject for them was foreign languages. 88.89 percent (40 students) of total respondents of College of Arts answered they considered the major the most important subject to them.2. What do you think about cheating 58.32 percent (277) of total respondents answered certainly not to the question what do you think about cheating. Students who answered it depends on the situation were 37.47 percent (178) and who answered it is all right were 4.21 percent (20). However, people who replied that it was all right or they could do cheating from the existing state of things occupied 41.68 percent of total respondents. It was not a good result which suggests in not a few students an absence of conscience.△ Campus Life1. What will you most want to do when you are a university student According to the result of this survey, 29.47 percent of respondents (140) said 'travel', 29.26 percent (139) said 'club activity', 24.63 percent (117) said 'study what I want to study', 9.89 percent (47) said 'dating', 3.37 percent (16) said 'volunteer activity' and 3.37 percent (16) chose others, which included studying English.△ About Dong-A Univ.1. What do you think about the amount of tuition fee charged by Dong-A University According to the result of this survey, 52.42 percent (249) said 'expensive' and 21.47 percent (102) said 'very expensive'. Therefore, this survey shows that 73.89 percent of respondents think tuition fee is expensive. 'Adequate' is 22.95 percent (109), 'inexpensive' is 2.32 percent (11) and 'very inexpensive' is 0.84 percent(4), so only 3.16 percent of students think tuition fee is inexpensive. Most students think tuition fee is expensive in college of engineering, 92 percent (46) of respondents. The next is College of Arts, 91 percent (41), College of Physical Education and College of Natural Resources are 88 percent (39, 44 each).△ Interest and Life1. How will you pay your living expenses According to the result of this survey, 72.21 percent (343) of respondents said pocket money and part-time job. 13.26 percent (63) said that they receive pocket money from their parents and 13.05 percent (62) said that they work at a part-time job. Whether they receive pocket money and work at a part-time job or they only work at a part-time job, 85.26 percent of students said that they work at a part-time job during university life, so part-time job is pervasive among university students.2. How many books did you read in a month According to the result of this survey, 60 percent (285) of respondents said that they read 1~2 books for a month. 3~4 books are 9.89 percent (47), 5~6 books are 3.37 percent (16) and more than 7 books are 1.05 percent (5). 25.68 percent (122) said that they didn't read a book for a month. This survey found that more than 85 percent of students said that they didn't read a book or read 1~2 books for a month. This result suggests a problem in the culture of reading in Korea.△ Politics1. What do you think about North Korea In a survey of students' opinion on North Korea, those who answered indifferent were the highest percentage rating 45.89 percent. Those who marked dislike and hate (27.16 percent, 9.26 percent) adding up to 36.42 percent was 3 times higher than those who answered that they liked or very fond (9.89 percent, 2.32 percent) North Korea. People who answered 'don't know' was 5.47 percent. 2. Do you think reunification should be accomplished In a survey of students' opinion on reunification, those who answered indifferent were the highest percentage rating 34.53 percent. Those who marked agree was 21.26 percent; definitely was 11.79 percent. 33.05 percent of students think Korea should be reunified. However, students who answered disagree was 21.05 percent; never was 7.16 percent. 28.21percent of people think that reunification need not be accomplished. People who answered unsure were 4.21 percent. Those who do not deny or confirm were the highest with the percentage rating 38.74 percent. Students who agree on unity were 33.05 percent; students who were against on unity were 28.21 percent.△ Economics1. What do you think about economy level of Korea To the question about where you put Korea on an economic scale, those who answered ordinary were the highest percentage with 49.68 percent. 23.37 percent thought that Korea is rich; 1.89 percent answered that Korea is richest. The rate of students who think that Korea is rich is 25.26 percent. People who answered that Korea is poor was 23.58 percent; poorest was 1.05 percent (5). The rate of people who think that Korea is poor is 24.63 percent. 0.42 percent answered unsure. 2.What do you think about the future of our economy To the question about Korea's economic future, 41.68 percent answered that it will be neither bright nor dark; 37.68 percent said that it does seem to be dark. 1.89 percent said that it is going to be extremely dark. 39.57 percent of people said that it will not be good. On the other side, 15.16 percent said that it does seem to be bright; only 0.84 percent of people saw it as being extremely bright. That is to say, those who answered neither bright nor dark were highest percentage rating 41.68 percent. People who think dark was 39.57 percent; bright was 16.44 percent. 2.74 percent answered unsure.
