Diverse Language Learning Scholarship programs
Unlike the past when employers regarded as important the reading and listening skills in foreign languages, the recent trend in job hiring has changed. What is emphasized is foreign language proficiency in four domains such as speaking, listening, reading, writing.
Under these circumstances, Dong-A University is trying to diversify the type of scholarship program in terms of improving the skill for speaking foreign languages. By maintaining its continual program, like the cost of taking TOEIC Test, our university has set up more language support programs in regard to OPIC (Oral Proficiency Interview-Computer) and TOEIC Speaking test. Most Language Learning Scholarship programs are supported by the Student Service Department. Further the amount of its prize money varies from program to program. These scholarships, such as 'Language Capacity Reinforcement Scholarship' and 'Dong-A Versatility Scholarship' will be given to a student whose visual language skill improved and had a high score on the TOEIC with another language proficiency respectively. You Soo-young (Senior, International Trade) said, "I have so far taken a number of language tests to get a good job. But I cannot deny that it was a burden paying all the test cost." She added "I just came to know that there are various kinds of program which help students to get a good grade on the test. Diversifying the type of program would be helpful to students according to their purposes." Na woong, a manager in the Students Service Department, said, "In response to the job market which seeks employees with many skills in speaking foreign languages, we are undertaking more valuable program for students." He added, "Students sometimes end up paying for their tuition, a big burden, though, as long as they use helpful program from the school, they could receive further effective result."
A real program for students
Not only focusing on providing scholarships, Dong-A University also keeps pace by creating a positive atmosphere for students' studies. Both 'TOFLE Study program' and 'OPIC Study program' established last year and this year respectively, provide study rooms and useful facilities. Further, 'Global Zone' contributes to students by improving language proficiency with a variety of programs such as 'the face to face Conversation English Practice, Study Rooms Lending System, and the Free Lecture'. Park Eun-kyung, a coordinater at Office of External & Internation Affairs, said, "in spite of its recent establishment, a program like 'OPIC' enjoys a good reputation among our students. Office of External & Internation Affairs also provides a wide range of programs through opening linguistic classes and camps. Jo Eun-jin (Senior, English Language and Literature) said, "I have participated in English Camp run by our school. And it really helped me to get a sense of learning conversational English."
