"Wholesome Festival" or "Uninviting Festival"

The campus festival 'Daedongjae' was held with a new slogan: "facilitating well-made university festival without drinking culture" from Sep. 23th to 27th by HIT, the 46th General Student Council.

So as to prevent accidents associated with alcohol, university authorities and the General Student Council representatives banned students selling alcoholic beverages at the festival. Kim Dae-hyun (Architectural Engineering 4), sub principal of the General Student Council, said "alcoholic culture is not everything in the festival. Several Universities in Seoul are attracting a more mature culture from students' participation."

Some colleges shared unfavorable comments on the slogan mentioning that participation rate would be poor and there has not been input from student's opinion. However, after discussion, the slogan, "facilitating well-made university festival without drinking culture", has passed by managing committee of HIT in early September.

Events and performances hosted without any alcohol drinking, are gaining popularity. Some non-drinking games played at Seunhak and Bumin campuses included the△dart game, △making Dalgona, △flipping coin, △game of slap-match, △couple games, △bracelet making, △nail art service, △free market, △screening of a play etc. and Guduk campus prepared free beverages while students enjoyed a free tarot card reading. And the School of Design and Creative Technology, opened booths for henna and face painting. There was a 'Let's go back to memories of those far-off days' booth which sold 80-90's snacks and drinks.

"Most of past festivals tended to give weight to something alcohol related. But in this festival, it was nice to experience various activities with things to see near the night market among other events," Kim Su-yeon (Communication 4) student said. Chun Sang-hyun (Sports and Leisure Studies 2) said, "In the past festivals included alcohol booths, I often saw some drunken people utter loud voice. However there is decreased accident on the festivals relating with drinking alcohol, keeping the neighborhood clean and improving the university's image."

There is an unsuccessful event, 'Wonderful library'. The donation events hosted by the General Student Council was planned to sell books received from students. Profits from 'Wonderful library' and 'making bracelet' were aimed to be given to charity. But since there were only about 200 books contributed and low profits from the 'making bracelet' events by Women’s General Student Council charity contributions amounted to about 200 books being donated to Hanlim library.

Some students submitted grievances about the ban on alcoholic drinks. Woo Ga-eun (Music 3), who has opened a pub and performed events every year, said "we will not yield too much money to afford expenses for food ingredients. Because there's not any alcohol beverages, students just pass by seeing only performances." Lee Geun-ho (Mechanical Engineering 3) student said "my University is famous for a big scale festival in Busan. It seems that, on account of the slogan prohibiting drinking, the scale and visitors diminish. It would be better to make moderate regulation on drinking alcohol rather than to do overall prohibition."

In this respect, Kim Dae-hyun (Architectural Engineering 4), sub principal of the General Student Council, said "it is possible to expect that this slogan is controversial matter. But we took it in a favorable sense, hoping to make more adult cultural festivals."

Welfare committee of HIT said "as it is the first time to operate nonalcoholic festival, there are many things to be worked out. But it is sure to say that inside and outside, the university was kept clean and the number of accidents also decreased considerably. Starting this festival, we will try utmost to foster healthy festival culture together with School body."
