The warm and pinkish spring is passing into the cool and emerald summer. If we cross the huge mountains of team projects and finals week, we will greet the summer vacation and can enjoy a cool summering. We will then have time to visit the many summer resorts in Busan—there are world famous beaches like Haeundae Beach and Gwangalli Beach; and Songjeong Beach, the Mecca of outing for college students. But if you are tired of the stereotyped repertoire of summer vacation filled with the heat of crowd, how about these places? Here are our picks of secluded summer resorts that will bring pleasant coolness to another level.

▲ Daecheoncheon Valley.

Behind the grey forest of buildings, the green forest of Daecheoncheon Valley

Behind the tidily built new town apartments of Hwamyeong-dong, there is Daecheoncheon Valley filled with green shades. The valley rises in Mt. Geumjeong and is flowing into Nakdong River. The most famous place along the stream is ‘Aegiso’, the area located in the midstream. For the picturesque scenes of the limpid stream running in twists and loops through the soft rocks, the spot is the beloved resort of Buk-gu in Busan. Many tales about the origin of the name, Aegiso, are passed down. One of these tells, once upon a time, for admiring the beautiful scenery of the area, a woman didn’t even know that her baby had drowned. So the spot became called Aegiso (the pond where a baby drowned.)

Daecheoncheon Valley is accessible by taking a shuttle bus (Geumjeong-gu 1) nearby exit 4 of Hwamyeong subway station. Hwamyeong Elementary School located in the downstream provides parking spaces every summer for vacationers visiting Aegiso. The place is reachable in five minutes on foot after parking at the school. In the upstream areas, Hwamyeong Arboretum is located. As there are varieties of facilities for experience and watching like the zoo for plant-eating animals and the library of trees, we can enjoy family trips as well as summering. Even seriously collapsed by Typhoon Sarah, the valley is still mesmerically beautiful.

▲ Imrang Beach.

Silent beauty, Imrang Beach

Where Busan and Ulsan converge, there is a tranquil seaside at Imrang Beach. Alongside the beach, evergreen pine groves stretch out like a wall. The sand of the widely open coast is so fine that it feels like you are treading on snow. The beach became very popular among filmmakers for the quiet mood of its fishing village. The movies ‘Shiny Day’ and ‘My Brother’, and ‘Mr Hong’ were filmed in there. A row of houses lining the snowy-white sands is the mural village of Imrang beach. Most accommodations haven’t any signboard instead only colorful murals.

After taking a bus heading to Cheonggang-ri Bus Garage near the area of Jangsan Subway Station, you can go to the beach by taking a bus at the garage. It is also reachable by a bus from the vicinity of Beomeosa Temple. But all busses heading to the beach run infrequent so that we recommend you take cars. Although it is hard to visit as the beach is located far from the city streets, you can find the untapped natural beauty that never existed in an urban area.

The Sweet Coolness after Bitter Heat, Jangsan Valley

▲ Jangsan Valley.

Going through the forest of new town apartments in Heaundae, you can see thick forest and the crystal-clean stream of Jangsan Valley. The valley is located in Mt. Jangsan, where an army is in; it was unaccessible for a long time so that the valley is well preserved.

The highlight of the valley is Yangun Falls, one of 8 Great Views of Haeundae. The name of the fall, Yangun Falls (the falls of rising clouds) derives from the cloud-like scene of rising waster sprays fallen from 7~8 meters high. A little temple called ‘Pokposa’ (The temple of falls) is located below the fall. With the sound of falling waters, the aroma of incenses brings the novel mood.

The valley is easily accessible by going on feet after getting off on the area around Daerim Apartment or Daedong Intersection. But if you want to enjoy very much the summering in Jangsan Valley, we recommend you walk from Jangsan Subway Station to the valley. Along the way you can taste the sweet coolness beyond all pains of heat.

▲ Dadaepo beach.

Beyond a summer resort, the tourist attraction, Dadaepo Beach

In the southernmost region of Busan, there is a port area with a vast sandy beach —Dadaepo beach. Placed where the river ends and sea starts, the beach under with the warmish red glow of sunset is popular as a subject of artworks. The beach is perfect for swimming as the water is shallow and warm. Furthermore, one of the world biggest fountains is in the Dadaepo Beach — where the Dadaepo Sunset Fountain of Dreams was listed in the ‘Guinness Book of World Records’ The ground fountain looks like a square, but when it opens, a splendid fountain show unfolds to music and lights. With the fountain operates from April to November in every year, people can enjoy various experience events like music request shows and propose shows, and photo contests. You can also visit ‘Molundae’, one of 8 Great Views of Busan. The name, Molundae (the place sunken in cloud) originates from the fogs of sea currents rolling over the area frequently.

You can reach the beach by bus nearby at the Goejeong Intersection after getting off from Goejeong subway station. But a Costal Maintenance Project has been in progress since 2008. Varieties of facilities like the Entrance Plaza, the Culture and Eco Trails, and a stream of the beach with costal walks will be complete this December. We expect that, if the subway station is completed, Dadaepo beach — where one of 8 Great Views of Busan, Molundae and one of biggest fountains in the world listed in Guinness record, and the grand beach park will be built soon are concentrated together — will take rank with Haeundae Beach as the biggest tourist attraction of Busan.
