A can of coffee on the way to school, a cup of coffee with dessert and a sip of coffee when we are doing some tasks at night. Coffee is a beverage we are continuously taking. To experience making coffee in person, I visited the Busan Coffee Gallery located in Gwangan-dong, Suyeong-gu.
Many people apply to the daily barista experience program held at the café because they usually learn a lot about the coffee recipe and are given a professional staff education. But, at the Coffee Gallery, we can experience a simple coffee recipe rather than professional education about being a barista.
In the coffee gallery, we can learn about ‘Grinding’ the beans and the ‘Hand Drip’ process. Extracting a crude liquid from coffee ground is ‘Drip.’ This is the most significant and basic course of making coffee. During the ‘Drip’ stage, boiled water is poured, where the taste of the coffee usually becomes different. It is because that concentration of coffee becomes different depending on how slow or quick we pour the water and adjust the water quantity.
My hand went numb because it was my first time making coffee and I tried to adjust the water quantity to make the coffee delicious. But I succeeded to get a wonderful smell in the completed coffee. I tried it and it was rather bitter. Oh Hyeon, the president of the Coffee Gallery, said “You should have the coffee with a sweet dessert” and gave me a chocolate, which complements the taste of the coffee and vice versa.
Not only did the coffee contain a good scent, we can also make hot chocolate lattes that taste sweet. Latte’s charm is that we can feel soft texture and see ‘Latte Art’ with the bubble and syrup on top of the coffee. You can make a hot chocolate latte pouring water into hot chocolate powder and adding heated milk with bubbles in it. ‘Latte Art’ is done using chocolate syrup and milk bubble is the finale of the hot chocolate latte. We can make ‘Latte Art’ easily more than we thought. We should carefully pour syrup after pouring milk bubble. I like to draw circles with syrup on the latte by mixing it with a toothpick. I was taught to draw a heart and flower, but I couldn’t draw a beautiful one because of my lack of ability. But it had a very soft texture than other coffees I have bought from a vending machine.
I realized that the taste of coffee is depends on who make it. Although it takes a long time to make coffee by myself, I think that the different coffee tastes made by each person are charming. It is a good choice to visit the Coffee Gallery if you want to know about the taste of coffee you make.
