The 'quality' of a university building is one of the established ways to evaluate a university. In line with current circumstances, we questioned students who will be the main users about DAU's International Center.
Progressing at 2.5%, the International Center on Bumin campus will be completed in 2012. With a budget of 430 hundred million won, it will consist of three main buildings: △Dormitory △Library (1,000 seats) △Banquet Hall △Bank △Other facilities (convenience store, optician´s shop) and physical fitness center.
We looked at the International Center dormitory, which can admit nearly 700 persons, smaller in scale compared to Hanlim Dormitory (1,019 persons) of Seunghak Campus. Park Mi-sun (Sophomore, Management) said, "Hanlim Dormitory lacked soundproofing between rooms. Therefore, my privacy was not protected. Please endeavor to soundproof facilities." Lee Sook-hyeon (Freshman, MIS) said, "There are only three washing machines for men at Hanlim so it was very inconvenient. I wish the new place has more washing machines." Oh Da-som (Sophomore, Law) commented, "There were a fitness center and internet cafe at Hanlim. I hope there are convenient facilities in International Center."
Many students who used the Bumin campus reading room complained because the study atmosphere was disturbed by frequent exit and entrance of outsiders. So what do students hope for the library to be opened in International Center Park Su-ra (Senior, MIS) said, "There were a lot of restrictions in the use of the reading room on the 15th floor of the College of Business Adminstration. The reading room in International Center on the 10th floor should be built with the uses of the elevator under careful consideration." Seo jae-min (Junior, Public Administration) observed, "I encountered problems with junior high or high school students entering the reading room a few days ago. Like Seunghak and Gudeok campus, the Bumin library should install machines that assign seats by student ID card."
Taking into account students' opinions, Yu Kil-jun, construction administration general manager, commented, "the present reading room situated on the first floor of Bumin campus is a temporary reading room until the International Center library is completed. Moreover, the original reading room was not planned for present use, so there are a lot of insufficiencies." He expected the "International Center library to be equipped with the best technology and facilities."
Regarding its progress, he said, "There was a change in plan to save one billion won in costs. But the public works is presently in progress, and there will be no big discrepancy in the completion date."
The new building will have considerable positive influence on the school image and academic atmosphere. However, even though it will be a new building, if it is perceived as 'a castle in the air,' it may be avoided. We hope that the building will reflect well not only its carefully laid plans but also student opinion, earning its title and reputation as an "International Center."
